A little while back I took a furniture class at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. We were asked to design a concept for a resting space, without necessarily thinking originally about a piece of furniture. The first thing that came to my mind is how I wished I could stop time for a while, that would be a great way to rest.

Of course that's not possible, but it got me started on some sketches.

In each of these drawings there is more or less the idea of a membrane stretching on some structure. Imagine yourself floating on a foam pad in a swimming pool. When you take a particle of water and follow its trajectory it forms a random curvy path. To develop this idea in something more practical I played around with pieces of the bent tubes and by tucking the ends together I ended up with this twistable structure.

I even built a half scale model of it, with custom designed connectors I had a fabricator machined for me.

That's pretty much where it ended. The piece of fabric that could accommodate such a changing structure was a little too complex. But in my early explorations there was something that, perhaps not as cool as a transformable structure, would make a comfortable chair to rest into.
